Frequently asked aftercare questions

The healing process takes patience, hygiene, and the right products. Follow our comprehensive instructions below to care for your new body art, avoid common pitfalls, and keep your skin in optimal condition throughout recovery.

What initial bandage do you apply to fresh ink?

We apply a protective second skin bandage immediately after completing your tattoo. This medical-grade barrier protects your open skin from dirt, friction, and bacteria while allowing it to breathe during the critical initial healing phase.

How should I wash and clean my new tattoo?

Once your second skin bandage comes off, gently clean the tattoo using green soap and lukewarm water. Always use your clean bare hands rather than washcloths or sponges, and gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel.

What moisturiser should I apply?

Keep your skin hydrated with a mild, gentle unscented lotion. Apply a very thin layer a few times a day whenever the area begins to feel tight or dry. Be careful not to over-saturate the skin.

Do I need to buy expensive specialty aftercare brands?

Not at all. A simple, basic drugstore unscented lotion works best. You do not need costly specialty ointments or harsh chemicals—simple, fragrance-free hydration keeps your skin healthy and breathable.

What activities must I avoid while my tattoo heals?

You must strictly avoid swimming, hot tubs, baths, direct sunlight, and picking or scratching at scabs. Keep the area shielded from sun exposure and avoid soaking in water until the skin is fully regenerated.

Why is picking scabs so harmful?

Picking or peeling flaking skin and scabs will pull pigment straight out of the dermis, causing patchy healing, scarring, and possible infection. Always let scabs and flakes detach naturally on their own.

What symptoms are normal during healing?

Mild redness, light swelling, itching, and gentle flaking over the first few days are completely normal reactions as your skin recovers from the needle work.

When should I reach out to the shop or consult a doctor?

If your tattoo remains excessively painful, severe redness spreads, or you notice developing sores or oozing, please contact Living Dead Ink or consult your local doctor immediately to ensure you receive prompt medical attention.
